Lead Engineer (LE) focus on: team management and development that drives results
A Lead Engineer is leadership role that is showed more responsibilities towards people matters. Becoming one does not rule out their possibilities to be included as contributor or Tech Lead roles. The criteria success is to manage output of balancing competing priorities across more than one team
Accountabilities
- If the team has high lead time it’s on the LE
- If the team isn’t continuously improving their process to deliver more effectively & reduce bottlenecks, it’s on the LE
- If the team is not communicating well or working well together it’s on the LE.
- If the engineers who report to them don’t have the right skillset to tackle their problems it’s on the LE
- If the engineers who report to them aren’t focussed on their work it’s on the LE
- If engineers that report to them have performance problems that impact teams being able to deliver, it’s on the LE
- If engineers that report to them don’t have personal goals & career development plans that line up with team goals, it’s on the LE
Responsibilities
Performance evaluation
- Regularly collect and provide feedback to engineers in 1:1s
- Regularly speak with Tech Lead, Head of Engineering, PMs, and others about feedback from/about their team members
- Develop & regularly track goals and career growth plans for engineers in 1:1s
- Deal with squad interpersonal & performance issues
Recruiting & resourcing
- Leadership of team recruiting and growth as well as partnership with talent/recruiting team
- Ensure engineers are assigned to right amount, variety, and type of work
- Work with other managers to allocate resources in their control, and advocate with company leadership for needed resources.
